Athletic Complex On Pace for May Opening
Although a formal grand opening date has not been established, portions of the new Plainfield Youth Athletic Complex are on target for a May 2010 opening. According to Plainfield Parks Director Clay Chafin, the baseball diamonds should be completed soon, while the football and large soccer fields are expected to be ready by summer's end. “Our first scheduled event at the site,” says Chafin, “will be the regular season tournament for the Plainfield Optimist Little League Baseball program in late May or early June, weather permitting.”
JDH Contracting is the current contractor continuing work on the facility, which is located on a leased 58-acre parcel on Plainfield Re-Entry Educational Facility property on the west side of town. When completed, the Complex will offer 15 soccer fields, two football fields and five ball diamonds, including a “Miracle Field” for the physically challenged. The finished Complex will also include shelter houses, concession and restroom facilities, playgrounds and more.
Chafin notes that efforts continue to create awareness and raise funds for the “Miracle Field”, a unique synthetic-surface facility that will enable physically challenged youth and adults to maneuver their wheel chairs, walkers and similar devices throughout the field of play. “The Miracle Field is such an important part of the overall vision for this complex,” says Chafin, “because it will make the recreation opportunities most of us take for granted accessible to those with special needs.”
