Plainfield Building Department Mission Statement and Duties
It shall be the mission of the Plainfield Building Department to provide a quality of service to the community through a knowledgeable, efficient and comprehensive staff that will help protect and safeguard property and the public welfare by overseeing the construction of buildings that meet the codes and standards set forth, while maintaining a customer friendly atmosphere, along with a prompt delivery of services.
The Building Inspector works to ensure compliance with federal, state and municipal regulations concerning building construction. Duties of the Building Inspector include:
Reviewing and approving building permit applications;
Issuing building permits, occupancy permits;
Performing inspections of structures being constructed to insure that they meet building code standards;
Reviewing and interpreting plans, specifications, codes and standards;
Maintaining records and files of plans, maps and permits issued;
Filing any necessary reports to state or federal agencies regarding permits and housing activities, as well as to the Town Engineer when requested;
Providing code and regulation information when requested by the general public, permit applicants, or other agencies or departments;
Attending and participating in meetings of the Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals as directed, as well as providing technical assistance to these groups; and
Remaining abreast of changes in building codes, regulations and construction techniques.
