Hummel Park
Located along South Center Street in Plainfield, Hummel Park is connected to the Plainfield Parks system via paved walkways, but it remains a separate park run by Guilford Township.
At 205 acres, Hummel Park is the largest township park in the state of Indiana, and considered one of the most beautiful. Amenities include the Hummel Park Performing Arts Center, the Guilford Township Community Center, and the Charleston Pavilion. The park also has over 2 miles of trails, multiple picnic shelters and gazebos, nature trails, and sports fields that draw people from surrounding counties to Hummel Park. Centrally located only 1.5 miles from the I-70/SR 267 interchange, it is a popular spot for housing special occasions with families and friends.
Hummel Park was founded in 1984 on land donated to the township by the state. The park was named after Jim Hummel, a former township trustee and one of the many people responsible for the drive to found a township park. Straddling the banks of White Lick Creek with a 300 foot wooden bridge, Hummel Park is both a place for activities and a place for relaxation. On the east side of the bridge are sporting venues and playground areas. On the west side of the bridge are nature trails and wooded areas with mature trees. Picnic shelters can be found on both sides.
The Guilford Township Community Center, constructed in 1988, is the heart and soul of Hummel Park. Administrative offices for both the park and the Township are located here, as well as meeting facilities for the community. The center is a 10,000 square foot building, with a 5,000 square foot banquet facility. Recently remodeled, the Community Center has been the site of weddings, receptions, anniversary parties, birthday parties, graduations, church dinners, and corporate functions, including training programs.
