Earth Day Festivities to Include Community Clean-Up

Don't forget that the annual Plainfield Community Spring Clean-up Event will be held Saturday, April 18. According to program manager Patty Seymour, the event is a great opportunity for individuals, local groups and businesses to show pride in their community by removing trash and debris from area roadways, major thoroughfares and transportation corridors. Seymour noted that the effort will also help keep debris from entering area streams and waterways.

In conjunction with their sponsorship of the Community Clean-Up Event, Cascade Asset Management will provide recycling of certain electronics at no charge. The Plainfield event is a part of county-wide Earth Day activities sponsored by the Hendricks County Partnership for Water Quality, in conjunction with the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District's Earth Day Festival at the Avon-Washington Township Park, April 18 from noon to 5 p.m.

Worlds Connect at Free Library Event

On Friday, April 17 from 6 to 8 p.m., the Plainfield-Guilford Township Library is hosting a free community event, encouraging visitors to see how “Worlds Connect @ Your Library”. According to the Library's Manager, Community Central, Susan Miller Carter, “While the library is a great resource anytime, this event, which is part of National Library Week, can help patrons discover even more information and opportunities in these tough economic times.”

Here is a sampling of the event's programs and features:

Activities for all ages: Hear Stories Under the Tree, and try the Bookworm Make-and-Take Craft in the Children's Room. Tour the local history archives in Information Services, and listen to live music by a local string quartet. Teens can play board games and card games; and everyone can learn about available Summer Reading Clubs.

Discover local groups: Speak with, and gather information from, representatives of local groups, including Hendricks County Senior Services, Hendricks County Master Gardeners, Hendricks County Habitat for Humanity, Hendricks County Arts Council, Hendricks Symphonic Society, Plainfield Youth Athletic Complex, Friends of the Hendricks County Historical Museum, Plainfield Kiwanis, Greater Guilford Township Civic Association, Tuesdays with Friends, Hendricks College Network, Project Homeless and Friends of the Library. Visitors can also learn how to schedule library meeting rooms and discover why your library is “Community Central”.

Learn about free special-interest classes and resources: Speak with library staff about upcoming free computer classes and other programs. Browse the latest novels, biographies or special-interest resources, from feng shui to model railroading to DVD documentaries. Visitors can also explore more than 250 magazines and newspapers, try out the library's new Express Internet computers, and chat with Library Board members.

Win prizes, check out favorite books, and more: Door prizes will be awarded throughout the evening. Visitors can check out mainstream and special-interest books, as well as great reads by local writers. Patrons can also shop for used book bargains in the Friends of the Library bookstore, and purchase the Friends' cookbook. Event visitors can also be among the first to purchase advance sale tickets for the Friends' Garden Tour. Carter encourages visitors to bring their friends, relatives and neighbors so all can discover how “Worlds Connect @ Your Library”.
