Buchanan Street Drainage Project Enters Final Phase
Buchanan Street area residents and visitors will be glad to know that major sewer and stormwater system upgrades are nearing the home stretch. Even as pipe installation continues, certain areas are already undergoing final-phase lawn, driveway, curb and sidewalk restoration. Town Engineer Tim Belcher noted that the entire project remains on track for completion before the end of the year.
The multimillion dollar project, which involves replacing pipe as large as 48 inches in diameter, was necessary for compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Water Act. Belcher added that the project also brings tangible benefits to area residents. “Because we're separating the sewer and stormwater drainage systems and adding capacity,” he said, “these improvements should help reduce residential problems with standing water and basement backups during rain events.” The project will also help the community's ecosystem by reducing or removing sediment and pollutants from stormwater runoff before it enters White Lick Creek.
Belcher noted that congestion in the area has been unavoidable because of the oversized equipment necessary to install the large diameter piping in small areas. “We appreciate the continuing patience of area residents,” he said. “The end result should be worth the shortterm inconvenience.”
