Discarded Lawn Clippings Create Drainage, Aquatic Life Problems

The Town of Plainfield encourages residents to take precaution when disposing of lawn clippings as they can slow storm drainage and may pose a threat to aquatic life.

“With lawn mowing season well underway, the Department of Public Works wants to remind residents to not mow, blow, or dispose of yard clippings and debris in inappropriate ways,” said Jason Castetter, Superintendent. “Clippings should not be swept into streets, the curb lines, or into drainage sewers where they can clog storm drains and produce rainwater backup. In addition, blowing grass clippings from a fertilized lawn into the street and drainage system poses a potential risk to aquatic life, since the debris might be carried into our creeks and ponds during a rain event. Fertilizer has the potential to disrupt the natural environment of the waterways.”

Castetter recommends that residents return lawn clippings to the yard during mowing by using a mulching blade or by mowing the lawn with the chute output always pointed toward the yard. This recycles nutrients back to the soil and can reduce overall annual fertilizing needs.
“If residents do want to remove lawn clippings and other lawn debris such as leaves, limbs, and garden debris from their yard, they should bring it to the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District Yard Waste Recycling Center,” he added.

“It's located at 7020 S. CR 875 E., Plainfield. The debris is then safely recycled into mulch and/or compost.”

DPW to Host Public Tours of North Wastewater Treatment Plant

The Department of Public Works will be hosting plant tours at the North Wastewater Treatment Plant, 990 South Center Street during the summer months.

This information program is open to the public. DPW encourages you to come in and meet the staff, walk with them through the steps of the wastewater treatment pro- cess, and discuss environmental issues like water usage, water conservation, and storm water quality.

The plant tours are scheduled for June 20th, July 18th, and August 15th, starting at 6:00pm to 7:30pm. No reservations are necessary. In the event of stormy weather, the scheduled tour will be cancelled.
