Spring Fling March 10
Registration is now open for the Spring Fling, a 15K road race and 5K run/fitness walk that will take place on Saturday, March 10. The event uses the Plainfield Greenways Trail system and town parks.
“We've scheduled the Spring Fling in coordination with the Mini-Marathon training we're doing here at the rec center,” said Brent Bangel, Facilities Manager for the Plainfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. “It's a timed race, and this will give runners an idea of where they are in their training. Also, their time can be used for placement at the Mini-Marathon and other events.”
Bangel noted that the main sponsor of this year's race is Indiana University Health West Hospital, the official healthcare partner of the Plainfield Parks & Recreation Department. “IU West is the main sponsor this year for all our triathlons, races, and special events on the trails. This is the first event of the year, and we're excited to have them with us to promote healthy lifestyles through exercise, nutrition, and medical knowledge.”
Other sponsors include Hendricks Regional Health, Banning Engineering, ADESA, Mitch's Incredible Ace, Plainfield Parks & Recreation, Hummel Park, Town of Plainfield, Plainfield Middle School, Duke Energy, JDH Contracting, Piazza Produce, Chick-fil-A, Runner's Forum, Mac Design, and Papa Murphy's Pizza.
Cost to run in the Spring Fling is $20 through March 2, with a guaranteed T-shirt from the event. After March 2, the cost is $25, and no shirt is guaranteed. XXL T-shirts are an additional $2. The 15K race begins at 8:15 a.m. with the 5K run/walk following at 8:25. Award ceremony is at 10:00 a.m. To register, pick up an application at the Plainfield Recreation and Aquatics Center or do it online at https://secure.getmeregistered.com/PlainfieldSpringFling.
Proceeds from the race benefit the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Plainfield High School.
Scoring will be done by End: Results and the times will be posted online at OnlineRaceResults.com
Dates Change for Summer Sewer Rates
After considering residents' concerns, the Plainfield Town Council has voted to shift the dates of the summer sewer rates so that they will now start with the May reading, billed in June, and end with the October reading, billed in November. This has been done to move the special rate toward the fall, when it has been drier, enabling those who sprinkle their lawns to go later in the season.
“I know that I've stopped watering at the end of August the last few years, even though it's been dry, because the special rate ended,” said Renea Whicker, one of the Town Council members. “This will help citizens keep their lawns from going dormant due to lack of water.”
The program, which has been in place for many years, offers residents a special rate of an unmetered $29.01/month. It is especially popular with those who tend to use a lot of water during the summer. For a non-refundable $50 application fee, residents may sign up for the special rate at the Town Hall, 206 West Main Street.
The program applies only to single-family residential sewer service. It does not apply to sewer service for any premises used wholly or in part as commercial, industrial, or multi-family (two units or more) property.
Residents who want to take full advantage of the program should sign up as soon as possible—the deadline is May 15. Those who have already signed up will be advised of the new starting and ending dates for the program. New customers will be allowed to sign up until August 1.
Summer sewer rates will be in effect when the application is completed and the application fee has been paid, subject to the June start date. The fee helps offset the town's operational costs. Questions may be directed to Lois Burgner, Utility Billing Director, at 317-837-0000. To complete the application, residents should go to the Town Hall.
Historic Town Center Group Seeks Volunteers
Plainfield's Main Street group, the Historic Plainfield Town Center (HPTC), is looking for volunteers to help continue revitalizing downtown. The group welcomes folks who have ideas for downtown and are interested in helping implement them. Their most recent project was choosing pictures and helping design the banners for the new downtown street lights.
“If you're interested in helping with projects like this, helping to recruit and promote downtown businesses, or creating events to occur downtown, we want to talk to you,” said Jill Sprague, who works for the Town's Planning Department. She can be reached by email at jsprague@town.plainfield.in.us or by phone at 839-2561 ext. 216. The group also has a blog at http://pfmainstreet.wordpress.com/ that provides meeting information and other news.
In addition, Sprague said that the Town and HPTC have obtained Downtown Enhancement Grant funds for any commercial building in Plainfield's Town Center zoning district. These funds can be used to make façade or signage improvements. Contact Sprague for more detailed information.
Customers Not Permitted to Access Water Meters
The Town has had numerous issues with utility customers accessing their water meters. Customers are not permitted to turn meters on or off.
Plainfield's Rates and Charges Ordinance No. 23-2009 states in Section 7, “No water from the Town's waterworks supply shall be turned on for any service in any premises, by any person except as authorized by the Town Council to perform such service.”
Customers may be assessed a $100 tampering fee for not complying with this ordinance.
The only exception is a licensed plumber who is making plumbing repairs.
Fees may be assessed at the time the Town discovers a customer has tampered with his/her meter.
Thank you for your compliance.
